Roadtrip 2023 Fall : Richland - Bend - Reno - Mammoth Lakes - Henderson - Donkey Heaven - Sedona - Joshua Tree - Paso Robles - St Helena - Brookings - Seaside

Day 7 - Mammoth Lakes to Henderson

The never-changing face of Bishop, CA.

We used to literally drive out of our way to get coffee here in Bishop. But, things have changed, and they are now run-of-the-mill-minus. Too bad.

The Thunderbird, is still, well, The Thunderbird.

We take the turn out at Big Pine to cross into Nevada north of Death Valley.

Truck is very excited - let's go wading!!

Yippee!!!!

It's a beautiful stretch of road - Sierras in the distant west now.

Joshua Trees? Are we lost? Again?

Just for George: OK. 4 Acres. Got it. So, where have all of the amenities gone? Burned to the ground? Washed away in a biblical flood? So many questions.

Roadside detritus.

Ohhhh - let's hang out for the Bed Races.

Wild donkeys have taken over Beatty, NV. We expect to see more at Donkey Heaven.

The Big Dune. It is really Big.

The Extraterrestrial Highway has started in earnest. That's AFB Nellis behind the greeting sign, and of course, Area 51 and the biggest Wildfire Lab.

Speaking of Wildfire Lab, we spot them moving their ET containment vessel in broad daylight. There must be some kind of "fire" at Nellis.

The M-80 was developed as a doomsday device after the inventor saw "Dr. Strangelove" in 1962. The device has sat here ever since, awaiting its destiny.

The official turnoff to Area 51. The Wildfire Lab doesn't have an official turnoff.

Findin' Starbucks. And yer lucky to find them fancy coffees at all out here in Pah-rump. Nevada, that is.

Our afternoon "port in the storm" comes with the added entertainment of watching these folks trying to burgle their own vehicle with keys locked inside. We left. They were still working on it.

Casinos and Fireworks. This is Nevada.

And there it is - the city in the desert. Vegas - of course. Think we may run into the CSI team?
